Energy and Climate Change

Question of Energy and Climate Change is Energy efficient appliances usage, Total campus’ smart building area (m2), Smart building implementation, Number of renewable energy sources on campus, Renewable energy sources and its capacity (in kilowatt-hour), Electricity usage per year (in kilowatt-hours), Total electricity usage divided by total campus’ population (kWh per person), The ratio of renewable energy production divided by total energy usage per year, construction and renovation policies Elements of green building implementation as reflected in all, Greenhouse gas emission reduction program, Total carbon footprint (CO2 emission in the last 12 months, in metric tons), Total carbon footprint divided by total campus’ population (metric tons per person), Number innovative program(s) during Covid-19 pandemic, Impactful university program(s) on climate change. The following is one of the photo evidence of indicators from questions in the field of Energy and Climate Change.

A. Energy Efficient Appliances Usage

To increase energy saving, Halu Oleo University has paid close attention to its energy management as well as energy conservation efforts. Therefore, mostl units and facilities have been equipped with energy efficient appliances, maximizing the use of natural light and air ventilation as well as implementing sustainable technology.

The percentage of energy efficiency at Halu Oleo University is 62%, this can be seen in the description of energy efficiency at the faculties / programs at Halu Oleo University as presented in the following table:

B. Smart Building Implementation

Smart building implementation at Halu Oleo University: 33,40%

C. Renewable Energy Sources in Campus

On the rooftop of the main building of Faculty of Engineering, a grid connected Solar energy system with online monitoring (https://www.sunnyportal.com/) has been installed with total capacity of 5 kW that has been used as the source of energy for the building. The total capacity produced from this renewable source in 2019 is around 5500 kWh.

72 units of Solar based Street Lightings have been installed at the main and the second campuses with approximately 50 watt installed capacity for each unit

D. The ratio of renewable energy production divided by total energy usage per year

While the total capacity produced from grid connected solar energy system at Halu Oleo University is in 2019 is about 5500 kWh. The ratio of renewable energy production divided by total energy usage per year: 16%

E. Elements of Green Building Implementation as Reflected in All Construction and Renovation Policies

The Rector of Halu Oleo University has issued the Decree No No 1630b/UN29/SK/KP/2016 about implementation of Green Campus at Halu Oleo University. This decree basically set that whenever possible, Halu Oleo University is free smoking area as well as implementing the green campus element including natural ventilation, full natural daylighting, energy conservation, energy management etc

F. The Total Carbon Footprint (CO2 emission in the last 12 months, in metric tons)

Total Carbon footprint in Halu Oleo University in 2019 = 32,421 metric tons and total Carbon footprint per person in Halu Oleo University in 2019= 0.79 metric tons
